Quicksand Performing Arts and Media was conceived during the 2005 carnival season on the Isle of Wight.

Our group, then known as the Sandown Community Group, was made up of approximately 5 adults and 13 children, ranging in age from 11 to 15. We also agreed to expand the range of activities we were involved in to incorporate media activities such as video and internet.

All of the young people had for one reason or another, not been part of a school or association group. The intention of our community group was to ensure those children had the opportunity to enjoy the multicultural experience 21st century UK carnival now provides. We also felt it was important (and necessary) to encourage adults to become part of our organisation to ensure this could be a family experience. We feel this is vital to assist in the transition from youth to adult.

Having enjoyed such an excellent season and acutely aware that we were financially dependent on the goodwill of the Sandown Carnival Association, IOW Arts Council and the Ryde Development Trust, we all agreed we needed to make plans to ensure our group would continue to florish.

During our 2005 carnival activities we formed links with many varied artists and professionals. This led to us incorporating Quicksand ... (continued next page)
